Questions to all the things, all the time!

When does registration open?

Racing registration will open Feb 6, 2021 at 12n EST and will close on May 1, 2021 at 5pm EDT. Late registrations will be accepted but there will be a late entry fee so please register during the primary window! Campsite reservations will be done with racing registration (if you only need a campsite you will use the same process). Golf carts, rental camping trailers and hotels are all completed with the vendor. Be sure to check out the Accomodations page from the menu. Note that the organizing committee needs time to use the registrations for coordinating pit placement, campsites, and for vendors supporting the event that need to know how many people will be attending. Your assistance in registering early is GREATLY appreciated!!

How do I (pit / camp / co-locate / be-very-close) to another attendee?

That's awesome! First, you need to make sure they know how you feel! Second, racing is an extremely family and friend oriented sport and we will accept your adjacency requests with registrations. We will do our very best to fit requests based on size, shape, and compatibility with the layout. Make sure your friend registers early with you to get the best location...otherwise we may need to accomodate other, earlier entrants first to be fair to everyone.

What are typical local weather conditions during the race week?

Average daily high temperatures in July in Springfield, Ohio are around 84°F, rarely falling below 76°F or exceeding 92°F. The highest daily average high temperature is 84°F on July 20. FYI - Champions Lake is 1,035' above sea level.

The website for Marine Racing Club is The APBA website is APBA clubs host races like the 2021 APBA Stock, Modified and Junior National Championship, and If you are interested in racing outboard boats you should check out the Driver School programs where you can take a ride in a real racing hydroplane. I have never attended an APBA National Championship, what should I expect?

You should expect to have a memorable experience with the finest drivers and race teams in the country! Truly, attending a National Championship event is an exciting experience and by the time the race week arrives you may be feeling a little overwhelmed! The week starts for most racers on Sunday when the pits will open for move-in and racers converge on the race location from all over the country. We are expecting racers from as far away as Massachusetts, Florida, Washington and California to make the trip to Springfield! As trailers are parked many racers begin to setup their pit, unload boats and take a visual look at the racing water. On Monday, the motors start for the first time when racers will get testing time on the course and equipment shakedown. By the time the National Championships arrive, most racers will have been racing in other local and regional events, so that the championships draw a LOT of close, competitive racing! Drivers meeting is held Monday evening where the racers receive instruction on course and racing rules, and driver roll-call is held to cover the schedule, the participants and answer any questions. Tuesday through Friday are when the real action starts and the green flag drops. Racing classes with more than 12 boats will proceed through elimination races until the final field of the fastest dozen boats will eventually battle for the checkered flag and the champions receive the designation of 1-US... the number reserved for the annual champion in each class. Saturday is reserved as a make-up day in the event racing is delayed during the week due to inclement weather. And, Saturday evening the championship banquet is held to honor the winners, their teams, friends and family. Throughout the week you will find evening events to meet and mix with other racers, and the many people who love boats, speed and competition!

Will I be able to meet the hosts of Throttled: Stock Outboard Racing Podcast?

We have strong reason to believe that you will have a chance to meet the hosts of the Throttled: Stock Outboard Racing Podcast at the 2021 Stock, Modified, and Junior National Championship event. In the meantime, please check them out at: https:// where you can hear more about 2021 outboard racing events!

Are the Golf Carts Gas or Electric?

They are gas carts. The carts come with a full tank of gas which is about 100 miles of driving. It would be really unusual if someone ran out. (Webmasters note: This is not a challenge!!) The rental company does not expect the tank to be full of gas upon pick up.

Where did you get those cool videos on the main page?

All credit to Jeff Brewster and John Wlodarski for sharing their content with us! They have a LOT of great videos on Youtube of outboard racing.

I'm renting my RV/trailer, how will they know where to place it?

We want your rental RV/trailer in the correct location just as much as you do! In June 2021 we will finalize campsite assignments and send a list of attendees and their campsites to the rental agency. Each registrant will also receive an email with this information for their reference. You MUST communicate your site to the rental company once you receive our communication and confirmation of your assigned campsite.

How fast do the boats go?

The 2021 APBA National Championships will host Stock, Modified and Junior categories, and each category has specific rules and configurations that determine how fast the boats will go. The junior hydroplane and runabout classes will be racing 35-40mph with drivers as young as 9 competing for the checkered flag. Many of the stock classes will race between 55-70mph, and the modified classes will be approaching 85mph racing only inches apart!
